Year 5 Learning

In year 5, we have been learning about forces. The children have been learning about a range of forces and the impact they have on our world. During our science unit of work, we have looked at how gravity pushes objects towards the centre of the earth. We have also looked at how forces can be a friend or foe as well as what a lever is and how they work.

In geography we have been learning about global trade and the impact it has on everyday life. We have learnt about different types of trade and what they might look like on a local, national and global scale. We have also learnt about where some of our food comes from, discussing about how it is imported into the UK from other countries and discussing the pros and cons of the food trade. We recognise that some of our food trade is from other countries, despite being able to grow and produce foods here in the UK.

In DT we have been researching bridges and what is the best way to span a gap. So far, we have worked on identifying the strongest beam design as well as what is the strongest type of support beam. By the end of the unit, we will have designed and built our own self-supporting bridges. We will continue to design, test and adapt based on our findings!
