A passion for our curriculum, inspiring reading…

Recently, one of our year 3 pupils articulated:

‘I love Roald Dahl, I love the way in which the characters aren’t what you expect. I’d love to understand more about him as an author. I’m curious about other authors that might write about characters in a similar way… I wonder who else is out there…’

Our children are curious about books authors and themes. Our Scholastic book fayre in Autumn term was a great success and due to the purchase of books by families, Scholastic rewarded Mansel Park with almost £800 in rewards to go towards books in our own school library. We thank you for supporting the children as readers at home and for the benefit this will have on our school library stock. We are told by colleagues that this is the highest amount Mansel Park has risen to date!

Take a look at some new books we have managed to secure with the rewards raised.

We have chosen based on pupil voice:

·         engaging non-fiction books to support our curriculum from the Horrible Science & Horrible Geography range

·         Personal favourites such as: the Diary of a wimpy kid series, alongside similar authors to build variety into the authors we read, such as: Tom Gates and David Baddiel

·         KS1 friendly addition to our inspirational and significant people section within the library such as: Little People Big Dreams collection and Ada Twist Scientist collections

·         Supportive and reassuring reads to support our feelings and reflections, from Rachel Bright such as: Ruby’s worry, the koala who could and more!

·         KS1 friendly chapter books for our fluent readers such as: Wigglesbottom Primary series & The boy who grew dragons

·         Tom Fletcher collection from EYFS/KS1 range and the KS2 range: including That’s not my bear, Danger Gang and Space Band!

·         Trailblazer books for KS2: an addition to inspirational people linked to our interests such as gymnasts, footballers and singers

Our children are creating self-led creative projects at home with parents, inspired by our curriculum! First we have Layla-Mae who created her own volcano at home! Layla created her own book pop up in our school library so that other pupils can build knowledge ahead of diving into a world of volcanoes when they reach the Year 6 curriculum!

Inspired by Layla’s efforts, other children of the school have caught the bug for reading pop ups! Ronnie & Max in Year 2 have become our KS1 comic book creators! Currently working on a new series and joined forces, look out for ‘The adventures of Max & Ronnie’ (currently in draft stages) featuring in a comic book pop up later this year!

Also taking on a pop up in our library is Joey in Year 3! Joey has a passion for World War II and goes to great lengths to build knowledge and share this with anyone who has a listening ear. Take a look at Joey’s creative WWII battle scene, we were blown away! Keep your eyes peeled in our library for Joey’s pop up to follow soon! Thank you to all the families who have supported children with their pop ups at home. The children have started their own Postcard Heroes to thank you for your commitment and enthusiasm with their reading and creative ideas. We are now starting a waiting list for pop up projects, pop along to the hub with your home led project to join in!
