Nursery blog:
This week the children have been discovering and engaging with Pattern. We are noticing movement patterns and patterns in our environment. All team times have focused on this concept too, supporting the development through adult led team time activities. We have been encouraging the children to copy and extend a pattern.
What is a pattern and why is it important?
A pattern is something that repeats in a logical way. Exploring patterns is important during the early years, it allows children to make a prediction, understand what comes next and develop their reasoning skills. It also is linked to early computational thinking which is something they will explore as they move on to their next learning adventure in Primary School.
During our team times we are identifying patterns through shape and colour. While exploring patterns through a book called 'Pitter Pattern' Joyce Hasselerth. You can look at this book on youTube if you would like to continue to share it at home.
How can you help at home?
To continue this development at home, encourage your child to identify the patterns around their home environment for example; the pattern on clothing, bathroom tiles, carpets, rugs or a pattern on a leaf or animal. You could also try movement patterns, movement patterns are the most fun, you could try clapping your hands then bending your knee clap, bend, clap, bend clap stop...what will come next?
