Wow! What an amazing first 2 weeks back! Year 1 have returned to school eager to embark on their exciting learning journeys!

Writing

This week, the children learnt that a mysterious creature has raided the school and taken items from the classrooms. They explored his lair (our library) and found the classroom belongings alongside some intriguing clues! The children noticed that the creature had “sharp, pointed prickles”, “claws as sharp as razors” and “gigantic” feet! The pupils then sketched and labelled their interpretations of the creature, with many suggesting it could be a familiar storybook character! Year 1 predicted the creature could be the infamous Gruffalo! They were then challenged to look deeply at descriptions of the character and write some descriptions of their own! We are now writing Wanted Posters to pop around the school so we can hunt him down!

Maths

Our maths focus this week was place value to 20, specifically investigating numbers to 20, learning how to build and represent them in various ways. The children were introduced to these numbers with familiar representations, such as tens frames, and noticed that numbers between 11 and 19 need two tens frames because they have one full ten and some more! This helped the children understand the place value of the numerals of teen numbers! Year 1 also practiced counting, representing and reading the numerals to strengthen their understanding!

Science

This week, children were taught about the classification of animals! They learnt that animals can be grouped in various ways dependent on their common features! They were introduced to the term mammal and explored the characteristics of mammals; such as having 4 or 0 legs; hair or fur; giving birth to live young and being able to maintain their own body temperature. The children were then tasked the question “Do all mammals have 4 legs?”. The children solved this through analysing images of mammals and sorting them based on the amount of legs/ if they had legs. The children could confidently disagree with the question as they noticed that sea creatures that are mammals, such as dolphins, have flippers, not legs!
